Find the Nest
*
Carpenter ants cannot be fully eliminated from the area unless their nests are destroyed. Simply spraying carpenter ants you see with an ant spray will actually cause more damage than good, according to the E Pest Supply website. Killing ants outside of the nest will only cause the queen ant to lay more eggs. In addition, most carpenter ants simply avoid coming in contact with the spray. Instead, you must destroy the nest, along with the queen. To find the nest, look for clues the ants have left behind. For instance, look for ants that are carrying mature larvae. They are likely moving the larvae from the queen's home to satellite nests. Follow them and you will likely find the nest. In addition, listen for the sound of chewing and rustling inside your home. If you hear it inside a wall, chances are the nest is in that wall. Once you find the nest, you can begin to kill the carpenter ants.
Dust Products
*
Ant colonies found inside walls, window sills or other hard-to-reach areas should be treated with dust products, according to E Pest Supply. Use a small hand duster to apply the product to the nest. If the nest is inside a wall, use a small drill bit to create a hole in the wall that gives you access to the nest. In addition, if the ants are inside your walls, remove electrical and plumbing covers and apply dust to the electric and plumbing areas. Carpenter ants will often travel along electrical and plumbing routes. Dusting these areas will help spread the dust to them, helping to destroy the nest.

Bait
*
Bait is often a safe and effective way to eliminate carpenter ants. Bait is available in granular or gel form, according to the Bug Clinic website. Bait can be applied into wall openings, such as light switches, and in hidden areas, including attics, under carpets and in cabinets. The ants will eat the bait themselves and often take pieces of it back to their nests. Some baits work best when placed in products that are designed to house the bait, while others can be placed on their own. Place bait anywhere that you have seen carpenter ants.
